Volcano!
Volcano
Singapore has often been thought of one of the most safest countries due to its geographical location, however a recent study by Dr Andrew Verolino at NTU’s Earth Observatory of Singapore, published an investigation in Natural Hazards And Earth System Sciences in April about how undersea volcanic eruptions could possibly affect Singaore. There are over 466 volcanic islands in the waters of Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the Andaman and Nicobar islands. The potential threat is KW-23612 which is located in northern South China Sea. If this volcanoe should erupt it could trigger tsunami waves that could reach Singapore. These potential waves could trigger flooding, damage infrastructure and could cause serious issues for Singapore. Volcanic ash could ground air traffic and cause potential health risk to Singaporeans if winds were right.

It’s interesting to think about Singapore, which is usually seen as one of the safest places, being at risk from something like an undersea volcanic eruption. The fact that a volcano in the northern South China Sea could trigger a tsunami that might reach Singapore is a bit unsettling. If that were to happen, it could cause flooding, damage to buildings, and disrupt transportation. Great post, it really makes you think about the unexpected.
ReplyDeleteHello Maggie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing Singapore's volcanoes. I initially wasn't worried about undersea volcanic eruptions, assuming they wouldn’t have much impact or might even be prevented by the water. However, I totally forgot that they could trigger ocean waves and potentially cause a tsunami, which is a serious threat and could be highly destructive or deadly. Singapore has an unsettling number of volcanoes compared to my country Iceland which only has 130 but only 33 active. After doing some research I found out that Iceland does in fact have an underwater volcano called Surtsey sharing a similarity with Singapore!
Very interesting read!- what are your sources and mitigation measures?
ReplyDeleteHI Maggie, I found it very interesting how close by volcanic eruption could cause major disasters to Singapore with earthquakes if the KW-23612 would erupt. I had also never knew there were a lot of underwater volcanoes that could potentially erupt and cause major damages to every island in the area, great post I shall now keep an eye out next time I wish to travel.
